General Employment Permit Renewal
You can renew your Irish General Employment Permit if it is about to expire so you can continue working. However, you might not need to renew your permit if you have been employed in Ireland for five years.
We are a team of professional immigration lawyers who can offer advice and support. Call IAS at +353 061 518 025 for immediate assistance in renewing your employment permit.
How to Renew a General Employment Permit
General Employment Permit duration is granted for two years. After that, you can renew the permit for three more years if you meet the requirements. You can apply for permanent residency if you have a General Employment Permit and stay in Ireland for five years.
The online renewal application must be completed at least four months before the current permit’s expiration and submitted with all necessary supporting documentation and payment.
Even if the current permit expires before the new one is approved, General Employment Permit holders can still work in Ireland if they apply for the renewal on time. You can follow the status of your application on the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment website.
Eligibility Criteria for General Employment Permit Renewal
To renew your Employment Permit in Ireland, you need to:
- Have a current General, Dependent, Contract for Services, or Intra-Company transfer permit.
- Be able to prove that the requirements of the present permit were met
- Show proof you will continue working for the employer named on the permit
- Prove that your employer is registered with the companies registration office
Critical Skills Employment Permit holders are automatically eligible for the General Employment Permit renewal. They may also be eligible for a reduced annual minimum salary of €28,692. This applies if they are on the Critical Skills Occupations list and are recent graduates from an Irish third-level institution.
Since June 25, 2024, General and Critical Skills Employment Permit holders have been allowed to switch jobs after 9 months without reapplying for the visa. This is under the terms of the new Employment Permits Act 2024.
Failure to meet the criteria could result in the rejection of your renewal application. If you need to confirm your eligibility, contact IAS on +1 +353 061 518 025 for guidance.
What Can I Do if My Renewal Application is Refused?
If your General Employment Permit application for renewal is denied, the decision letter will specify why. In most cases, you have 28 days to appeal the decision, depending on the grounds given. The letter will outline your circumstances and whether you are qualified to appeal the refusal.
To help you appeal the work permit denial, consult our knowledge team at IAS at +353 061 518 025.

Fees Associated With Renewal of General Employment Permits
The processing cost for renewal of a General Employment Permit is €750 for the permit valid for six months and €1,500 for those issued up to 36 months.
If your application is denied, you will get a refund of 90% of the cost. The current policy limits payment to applicants alone, even though the fee may be paid by a third party (for instance, if the applicant was an employee and the employer paid the charge, the refund will still be issued to the employee).
When the employer is the applicant, the employer or an enterprise development agency working on their behalf cannot remove any charges, fees, or expenses associated with the application from the General Employment Permit holder.

FAQs
The dates of your work permit are used to validate residence permits. It is best to check your Irish Residence Permit to confirm if it is about to expire at the same time as your work permit, as this is not always the case. You must also renew before its expiration, as you must have one to enter Ireland under any type of job permit.
The employment permit online system allows employers to apply for and manage work permits for their foreign employees. The system simplifies getting work permits by enabling employers to submit all required documents and track their application status online.
