Online Immigration Renewal System Expanded to All Non-EEA Nationals in Dublin

The online system introduced last year for non-EEA students to renew their immigration status in Ireland has been expanded. All non-EEA nationals based in Dublin will now be able to renew their immigration status through the online portal.

The Department of Justice & Equality stated that the new online system will make the process of renewals more straight forward for “10,000s of people every year”.

Last year, between 60-70,000 permission to remain renewals were processed in Dublin. It is hoped that the newly expanded system will significantly reduce footfall at the Registration Office in Dublin Burgh Quay.

First-time registration must still take place at the Dublin office due to the biometric information which must be taken. The office is due to reopen on 20th July for people who are looking to apply for permission to remain for the first time.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee said:

“With the reopening of the Registration Office in Burgh Quay we will initially prioritise appointments for people who had their first time registrations cancelled when we had to close the office in March due to Covid-19 restrictions.”

Elsewhere in Ireland, the Garda Naturalisation and Immigration Bureau (GNIB) will continue to process applications outside of Dublin and are currently considering how they can reopen registration offices nationwide.

“With the reopening of the Registration Office in Burgh Quay we will initially prioritise appointments for people who had their first time registrations cancelled when we had to close the office in March due to Covid-19 restrictions.”

Expansion of the Online System

Last year, a pilot scheme of the online system was introduced in the State. Non-EEA students could use the system to renew their immigration permission in Ireland, and up to 3,500 students used the system.

Last month it was confirmed that the online renewal system would be rolled out to all non-EEA students in Ireland.

At the time Minister Charlie Flanagan said:

“With the reopening of the Registration Office in Burgh Quay we will initially prioritise appointments for people who had their first time registrations cancelled when we had to close the office in March due to Covid-19 restrictions.”

Evidently, it has been decided that the system should be expanded to include all non-EEA nationals in Ireland. One can only assume that the online system will lead to a much more streamlined process.
